She trotted through the forest on little puppy paws, slush from the melting snow wetting her paw pads. It was early spring, and young Destiny was romping through the forest with her dad. She was just about 5 weeks old, her litter having been born early. As she padded through the forest, the trees beginning to turn green, she was awestruck by the wonders of Mother Nature.
“Daddy! Daddy!! It’s sooo pretty!” she said, looking up at the blue sky through the treetops, listening to the birds singing up above her little snout.
“Yes it is, my darling daughter. That natural beauty is why we respect nature, and only hunt what we can eat.” Her father replied as they walked back to the den, where Destiny’s siblings awaited with their mother.
That day, Destiny fell in love with the natural world and the harmony and peace. She thought that everything would be lovely, and that life was perfect. Little did the young pup know, things would turn upside-down, and she wouldn’t be enjoying the peace of the forest.

Fires All Around Me

Fang and I were wandering through the forest. It was dark and cloudy, and our parents had warned us to be back soon. They thought there would be a thunderstorm, but we didn’t believe them.
“Sis? Do you remember where that carcass was? Our little siblings need the food.” Fang asked me. We were a little over a year old, and we were excited to disperse. Our brothers our age had died of a sickness, and so we’d always been best friends.
“Nope. It might have been by the big tree, but I’m not sure. And I know our siblings are probably starving, Mom probably is too. She hasn’t had time to get out of the den, with Dad missing and all.” I said, cathing a somewhat familiar scent on the breeze... “Sister! There’s smoke! Oh god, please don’t let it be the den...” I said, turning tail and dashing back.
By the time we got there, it was too late. I saw my mother, but the young, 3 week old pups never made it out of the den. As the storm finally broke, my mother looked at us sadly, turned and ran away. We looked at each other in silence, the hurt and pain of losing everyone but each other a fresh wound that could never scar over. We knew inherently that it would only end in more pain if we stayed together, so we said our goodbyes, turned away, and I walked down the hill, away from the den, and walked. I just walked. Padded through the silence of the storm, only interrupted by the sounds of rain and thunder.
I don’t know how long I walked for, but when the clouds went away, I saw the stars. I knew my siblings were up there, watching over me. Exhausted both physically and mentally, I laid under a pine tree on a bed of old, dry needles, and dozed off.
