This story was originally wrote for the WolfQuest Forum Contest, but I missed the deadline... I decided to put it here so it wasn't just going to waste. Its not my best but WQ requested it to be light hearted... Enjoy if you can
The First In One Thousand Years
"Wow! Would ya look at that thing?" The young pup Canyon asked his brother, Hollow.
"Yeah, what is it?" Hollow asked in reply. Canyon rolled his green eyes.
"Its one of those human things dad was talking about!" He whispered as the hunter came closer. The two pups backed away and hid behind a log, poking their heads above it.
"Humans sure do look weird! Look how its standing on its hind legs! I've never seen anything like it!" Hollow exclaimed, examining odd creature. He thought it looked similar to an elk, standing on its hind legs and with a shorter neck.
"Let's get out of here before it finds us." Canyon said. His fluffy reddish and tan coat bounced around him as he trotted away. Hollow had a somewhat grey coat with dark green tinting, like a misty pine forest, and with blue eyes.
The two pups trotted briskly, occasionally bounding around and pulling each others ears.
"What will dad think when he finds out there's a human in the forest?" Hollow asked.
"Hmmm...." Canyon said in thought. "I bet he'll say that we were lucky to see such a rare creature! And that we should be honored and given the ranks of alpha!" He finally said, excited at the thought. "I bet its the only human in the world to be seen by a wolf!"
Hollow raised his brow in amusement. "If it was the only human to be seen by a wolf how would dad know what one was?" He asked suspiciously. His brother wasn't making any sense, as usual.
"I said in a thousand years!" Canyon said. He galloped ahead of his brother, a broad grin on his face. "C'mon! Our alpha ranks are waiting!" He called back over his shoulder.
Hollow picked up a lope, then moved into an easy gallop. He was the fastest of the two, and his lean puppy legs quickly carried him past his brother at a whopping five miles per hour!
The two soon reached the den site, where their mother, Sinola, lay waiting for them.
"Where have you pups been? I was getting worried." She asked them, standing to her paws. Sinola's coat was like that of Hollow's, only she had a marking on her for head. It looked like an exclamation mark, with a long line going down her for head and ending with a dot on her nose.
"Mom! You'll never guess what we saw!" Canyon exclaimed, he bounded up to his mother.
Sinola reached down to clean her pup, looking his head. "Mom stop!" Canyon said, he rolled over and pawed his mothers nose.
"What did you see that was so exciting?" Sinola asked, looking from each pup with violet eyes. The alpha female sat down, waiting for her answer.
Canute, the alpha male, then sauntered out of the forest surrounding the den.
"What's all the commotion about?" He asked. Canute's coat was a mixture of bright gold and white, he had banding on his back and a star on his chest.
"You'll never guess!" Hollow said excitedly. His father raised a brow, waiting for the pup to continue.
"We saw one of the most rarest creatures in the world!" Canyon added.
"We saw a human!"
Hollow and Canyon said in unison. Their tails wagged madly and their faces held expectant grins.
"Oh really? How interesting!" Sinola said, she took a glance to her mate, a sly smile on her muzzle.
"Well?" Canyon asked, his green eyes going from Sinola to Canute. The alphas raised a brow.
"Aren't you going to honor us and give us the rank of alpha?" Canyon continued.
"I mean, we are the only wolves to see a human in a thousand years!" Hollow added on.
Sinola looked to Canute, and Canute looked to Sinola. The two alphas then burst out in laughter. The pups thought they were laughing so hard they might actually explode.
"What's so funny?" Canyon asked in pure confusion. What he had said was true, wasn't it?
"Oh darlings, you have a lot to learn.." Sinola said.
